8.5 Additional Edit Descriptors

Additional edit descriptors are the colon (:), the dollar sign ($), and Q; they perform the following functions:

• The : edit descriptor terminates format control if no more items are in the I/O list.

• The $ edit descriptor controls carriage returns.

• The Q edit descriptor gets the number of characters remaining following a partial read operation.
