The DIRECT specifier asks whether a file is connected for direct
access. It takes the following form:
DIRECT = dir
- dir
- Is a character scalar memory reference that is assigned one of
the following values:
- 'YES': If direct access is allowed for the file
- 'NO': If direct access is not allowed
- 'UNKNOWN': If the processor cannot determine whether direct access is allowed
