The DIRECT specifier asks whether a file is connected for direct
access. It takes the following form:
DIRECT = dir
- dir
- Is a character scalar memory reference that is assigned one of
the following values:
- 'YES': If the file is open for direct access
- 'NO': If the file is not open for direct access
- 'UNKNOWN': If the file is not open
