1.2.2 The Server

Normally, Mail Monitor needs a server on each OpenVMS, DIGITAL UNIX, or Windows NT system that runs an entity that is to be monitored. The server supports all the scanning modules running on that system. When a server starts, it runs all the scanning modules it controls, as long as they are enabled. You need to configure the following for each server:

To change the default values, refer to Part II.

A server instructs a scanning module to start a scan according to the scanning interval configured for each entity. When a scanning module completes a scan, it returns the scanned information to the server. The server adds a time stamp to the information and stores it. The information is then updated during subsequent scans.

A server can produce a log file or a more detailed trace file. For instructions for setting a maximum size for the log file, and for setting up the server to produce a trace file, see Chapter 2.

For added security, it is possible to restrict client access to any server. The server keeps an access list, to record details of clients that are allowed access. The server checks this list before responding to a request from the client. For instructions for setting up this list, see Section 2.2.2.1.
