3.3 Generic Configuration

The Mail Monitor checks system components regardless of the individual characteristics of the product being scanned. These checks are `generic' in that they apply to all products running on the named operating system. They do not all apply on all operating systems.

The results of a check are reported in a way that usually relates to a tool. For example, the Monitor tool shows Monitor records; if a scan reveals an error, Mail Monitor generates a Monitor record with the appropriate information displayed according to entries in the initialization files. If there is no error, Mail Monitor generates a record or records, depending on which tools are in use.

This section covers the generic sections in the initialization files, with a separate section in the book for each section in the file.

Mail Monitor Error Levels
In this chapter, the value error_level is the severity code for the monitor record that Mail Monitor produces. This code can have these values:
 0
 1
 2
 3
 4
 success
 informational
 warning
 error
 fatal
