5 The Control Module

You can use the Control Management Module to define commands for the Control Scanning module which you can activate, control, and issue commands on remote servers.

A command defined for the Control Scanning Module has one of these formats:

• Command

• Command S:text optional- parameterbox

• Command L:integer optional-parametere

When you issue a command for the Control Scanning Module, and the module executes the command on the server, the Mail Monitor Client displays a window that gives the title of the command, the text you specified, and any optional parameter you gave.

When you click [OK], the Mail Monitor Client issues the command, and the Server sends any returns to the Client. The Client displays information returned in the same window.

You should be aware, when using the Control Scanning Module to manage services and other resources used by products being scanned, that some of those resources may be interdependent with other resources being scanned. For example:

• On OpenVMS systems, if you shut down the DIGITAL X.500 Directory Service, the MAILbus 400 MTA and any gateway dependent on it (for example the MAILbus 400 Message Router Gateway) will show a number of errors. In this case, any other Message Router applications will also develop related faults.

• On DIGITAL UNIX systems, if you shut down DIGITAL X.500 Directory Service, the MAILbus 400 MTA and any gateway dependent on it (for example the MAILbus 400 SMTP Gateway) will develop related faults.

• On Windows NT systems, if you use Stop NT Service to stop the Microsoft Exchange Message Transfer Agent, the Windows NT message (that would tell you first to shut down the Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Connector) does not receive a valid response, so the Control command fails unhelpfully.
