2 How to Run KAP

This chapter describes the commands necessary to execute KAP Fortran on OpenVMS Alpha systems.

KAP Fortran can be run in either of two modes:

• The recommended mode is to invoke KAP with the kfort command. The kfort command accepts Fortran 77 source as input, calls KAP to preprocess and optimize that input, calls the Digital Fortran compiler and the linker, and passes all of the compiler qualifiers to the Digital Fortran compiler and all of the linker qualifiers to the linker.

• KAP can also act as a standalone preprocessor with the kapf command that does not call the compiler or the linker.
