2.12 DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS

This section contains release notes pertaining to the DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS layered product.

2.12.1 Changes and Enhancements

This section contains notes about support for the DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS layered product.

2.12.1.1 Version 1.2--5 Ships with Year 2000 Enhancements

V7.2

The OpenVMS Version 7.2 installation script asks whether you would like to install DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS Version 1.2--5. This version contains several enhancements, including modifications for the Year 2000.

DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS Versions 1.2--3 and 1.2--4 are still supported, but you must apply a kit to obtain the Year 2000 enhancements. (See Section 2.12.1.2 for more information.)

2.12.1.2 Year 2000 Kits for Versions 1.2--3 and 1.2--4

V7.2

A few modifications for the Year 2000, as well as other enhancements for DECwindows Motif, are included in the following kits:
Version Platform Kit Name
Version 1.2-4 VAX VAXMOTF02_U4012
  Alpha ALPMOTF03_U4012
Version 1.2-3 VAX VAXMOTF08_U3012
  Alpha ALPMOTF08_U3012
Version 1.2-3
(worldwide)
VAX VAXDWMW02_U3012
  Alpha ALPDWMW02_U3012

These kits are available on the OpenVMS binary CD-ROMs in the DECwindows directories and through the normal service channels, including the Software Patch (ECO) Access web page.

Use the Search and Download Utility to search for keywords VAXMOTF and ALPMOTF. Customers with service contracts can access the Version 1.2-3 kits.

All of the Year 2000 enhancements are included in Version 1.2--5, which ships on the OpenVMS Version 7.2 kit (see Section 2.12.1.1).

2.12.1.3 Adobe Display PostScript Support

V7.2

As of August 1, 1998, Compaq Computer Corporation no longer supports the Adobe Display PostScript software on the DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS product. (See Section A.1 for details.)

2.12.1.4 Spyglass Enhanced Mosaic Support

V7.2

Starting with DECwindows Motif Version 1.2--5 for OpenVMS, which ships with OpenVMS Version 7.2, Compaq Computer Corporation no longer supports Spyglass Enhanced Mosaic on the DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS product. Spyglass Enhanced Mosaic was included with DECwindows Motif Version 1.2--3 and 1.2--4. Compaq suggests that users replace Spyglass Enhanced Mosaic with Netscape Navigator (see Section A.8).

2.12.1.5 Installing Version 1.2--5 on Older OpenVMS Releases

V7.2

Before you can install DECwindows for OpenVMS Version 1.2--5 on OpenVMS Version 6.2, 6.2--1H1, 6.2--1H2, 6.2--1H3, 7.1, 7.1--1H1, and 7.1--1H2 systems, you must first install the POLYCENTER Software Installation utility kit that is in the [PCSI] directory on CD-ROM 1 of the OpenVMS Version 7.2 kit. This step is required because DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS Version 1.2--5 uses new POLYCENTER Software Installation utility functionality. This new functionality is integrated into OpenVMS Versions 7.1--2 and 7.2, so you do not need to install the POLYCENTER kit on these systems. When the POLYCENTER kit is installed on older systems, it updates the POLYCENTER Software Installation utility, associated command procedures, help text, and documentation.

For more information about installing DECwindows for OpenVMS Version 1.2--5 on older OpenVMS systems, refer to the DECwindows Motif Version 1.2--5 for OpenVMS Installation Guide and the Guide to the DECwindows Motif Version 1.2--5 for OpenVMS CD--ROM.

2.12.1.6 DECwindows Motif Version 1.2 for OpenVMS No Longer Supported

V7.1

Starting with OpenVMS Version 7.1, the OpenVMS operating system no longer supports DECwindows Motif Version 1.2 (or earlier) for OpenVMS. To use DECwindows with OpenVMS Version 7.1 or later, you must install DECwindows Motif Version 1.2--3 or later. If you use the English language version of DECwindows Motif, Compaq recommends that you install Version 1.2--5. If you want to install a language variant, see Section 2.12.2.2.

DECwindows Motif Version 1.2--3 or later does provide run-time support for programs built on earlier versions of DECwindows and DECwindows Motif. For more information, refer to the DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS Release Notes for Version 1.2--3 or later.

For OpenVMS Alpha systems, DECwindows Motif Version 1.2--3 is supported only if you install a remedial kit. Remedial kits are also available for OpenVMS VAX systems. For information about remedial kits for both platforms, see Section 2.12.2.3.

2.12.2 Problems and Restrictions

This section describes problems and restrictions associated with the DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS layered product.

2.12.2.1 System Parameter Values Required for Installation

V7.2

The installation procedure for DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS Version 1.2--4 and 1.2--5 can fail if the values for the GBLPAGES, FREE_GBLPAGES, and CLISYMTBL system parameters are set too low.

The installation fails with the following error:

%SYSTEM-W-NOSUCHFILE, no such file
\sys$library:decw$xlibshr.exe\

If the installation fails, set these parameters to the minimum values shown in the following table; then reinstall the product.
  GBLPAGES FREE_GBLPAGES CLISYMTBL
Alpha 150000 92000 512
VAX 62000 47000 265

2.12.2.2 Language Variants Not Available in Some Versions

V7.2

No language variants are yet available for DECwindows Motif Version 1.2--5. Only Japanese and Hebrew variants are currently available for DECwindows Motif Version 1.2--4. Consult your Compaq support representative for more information.

2.12.2.3 Remedial Kits for DECwindows Motif Version 1.2--3

V7.1

Starting with OpenVMS Alpha Version 7.1, DECwindows Motif Version 1.2--3 is supported only if you install the appropriate remedial kit. OpenVMS VAX Version 7.1 or later supports DECwindows Motif Version 1.2--3, but it also has problems unless a remedial kit is installed.

Why You Should Install the Remedial Kit

If you run DECwindows Motif Version 1.2--3 on an OpenVMS Version 7.1 or later system and do not install one of the remedial kits described later in this note, OpenVMS Alpha users will experience all of the following problems, and VAX users will experience all but the first three of these problems:

The remedial kit you install depends on whether you are running the U.S. version of DECwindows Motif Version 1.2--3 or the worldwide version.

Remedial Kit for U.S. Version

If you want to use any of the following language variants, you must install the U.S. version of DECwindows Motif:

If you use the U.S. version of DECwindows Motif Version 1.2--3, install the following remedial kits:

These kits also include enhancements to make DECwindows Motif Version 1.2--3 ready for the Year 2000. These kits ship on the OpenVMS Version 7.2 operating system CD-ROM and are also available from your Compaq support representative.

Remedial Kit for Worldwide Version

The following language variants include the worldwide version of DECwindows Motif:

If you use the worldwide version of DECwindows Motif Version 1.2--3, install the following remedial kits:

These kits also include enhancements to make the worldwide version of DECwindows Motif Version 1.2--3 ready for the Year 2000. These kits ship on the OpenVMS Version 7.2 operating system CD-ROM and are also available from your Compaq support representative.

2.12.2.4 Console Broadcasts Disabled

V7.1

In the U.S. version of DECwindows Motif Version 1.2--3, console broadcasts are disabled by default by the DECwindows startup procedure on nonworkstation systems as well as on workstation systems.

To allow broadcasts to OPA0: in the U.S. version of DECwindows Motif Version 1.2--3, edit the file SYS$MANAGER:DECW$PRIVATE_APPS_SETUP.COM (creating it if it does not exist) and add the following global symbol definition:

$ DECW$CONSOLE_SELECTION == "ENABLE"
Then, restart DECwindows by entering the following command:

$ @SYS$MANAGER:DECW$STARTUP RESTART

On workstation systems, Compaq recommends that you set DECW$CONSOLE_SELECTION to WINDOW instead of ENABLE. This setting directs console output to a Console Window application (which is new in DECwindows Motif Version 1.2--3) instead of to the operator window on the graphics screen.

Note

If your workstation uses a Qvision graphics board, you must set DECW$CONSOLE_SELECTION to WINDOW. (See Section 1.12.1.1 for another release note pertaining to Qvision graphics boards.)

If you prefer that console broadcasts not be disabled by default on nonworkstation systems, install the following remedial kits, which ship on the OpenVMS operating system CD-ROM and are also available from your Compaq support representative:

Note that console broadcasts will still be disabled by default on workstations.

2.12.2.5 System Files Purged During Startup

V7.1

In the U.S. version of DECwindows Motif Version 1.2--3, the following DECwindows files are purged each time DECwindows Motif starts:

This problem is corrected in Version 1.2--4. If you are running the U.S. version of DECwindows Motif Version 1.2--3, you can correct this problem by installing the following remedial kits, which ship on the OpenVMS operating system CD-ROM and are also available from your Compaq support representative:

2.12.3 Documentation Changes and Corrections

The following note corrects a file specification in the Getting Started With the New Desktop manual.

2.12.3.1 Getting Started With the New Desktop (Alpha Only)

DECwindows Motif V1.2--4

A file specification for a command procedure in Getting Started With the New Desktop (part number AA-QUW1A-TE) is incorrect. The file specification appears in Section 3.4.9, paragraph 5, as follows:

"Optional DECwindows applications, such as DECwindows Notes, may not provide any information and therefore are not restarted. For such cases, there is a command procedure called disk$:[user.DT]SESSIONETC.COM that you can use to start any applications that cannot be restarted automatically. This procedure is analogous to the DECW$LOGIN.COM procedure in the traditional DECwindows environment."

The correct file specification is:

disk$:[user.DT.SESSIONS]SESSIONETC.COM
